I did my "make -j modules" on 64 MB RAM + 130 MB swap test (most things in
.config marked as modules). Passed without problems (2.0.31 was always
throwing warnings or crashing). But then I have left the
machine idle (for about 7 h) and then:

arch/i386/kernel/smp.c:1022
The system was idle at that time only the usual deamons
(nfsiod,kerneld,sylogd,klogd,sshd,crond,inetd,named,lpd,rpc.mountd,rpc.nfsd,
atalkd,papd,afpd,sendmail,xntpd(!),httpd,nmbd,xdm,squid) running.
xntpd had some problems 10 minutes before:
