NON IRQ DEADLOCK in 2.0.31

I came back to a not-too-pretty picture tonight, there was screen full
of Validated Probe... and at the bottom NON IRQ DEADLOCK DETECTED BY CPU 0
and a frozen machine.
The machine serves web pages (150K hits yesterday), but it's off peak. A
backup was also running, reading from this machine via NFS (from an
Alpha).
It's the Dual PII I mentioned elsewhere, running 2.0.31 w/no patches.
The machine has a fast ethernet card (tulip, running in full duplex with a
3com switch), but the alpha and the rest of campus is 10Mb, so it's not a
horrible ammount of traffic...
I have this feeling that something similar may have happened a while
ago in a backup situation with the other SMP machine we have (and our
backups are a bit infrequent...)

Is there any way to get the machine to automagicly reboot from this?
This seems very similar to a panic to me, and I have panic=30...
