st0: Error 26030000 with BT-948, HP35480A DAT, 2.0.32

I have Buslogic BT-948 SCSI controller and HP35480A DAT tape, kernel 2.0.32.
While taking a backup with dump, I got the following error

st0: Error 26030000

Now every command (mt, restore, cat, dd, etc) creates the same error
message, and returns with "I/O error". The tape can't be ejected from the
drive. "mt status" is an exception, giving this output

SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (40010000):
BOT IM_REP_EN

There have been no problems with the system before.

Altavista tells me that some people have received the same error message
when using SCSI disk with Adaptec 2940 and kernel 1.3.59.
