This could well be due to missing a keyboard interrupt.
(Specifically, the one when you released a Ctrl key). The keyboard
driver probably thought you still had the Ctrl key down. When this
sort of thing happens (I haven't seen it under Linux), I sequentially
press and release all of the Ctrl, Alt and Shift keys. Most times that
fixes the keyboard state.
