I'm not through yet with compiling this patch. However, from looking
at it, I don't think it really *adds* FreeBSD support. Instead, it
replaces the existing SunOS support with FreeBSD support. One example:
the definition of a 'clean' filesystem is different between
implementations. On SunOS, a clean file system should have the
difference between 0x7c269d38 and the current time in the fs_state
field, whereas 4.4BSD uses the fs_clean field.

So if we want to have some progress, I propose the following:
- the sources should explain what ufs versions this driver is supposed to
cooperate with
- if people add support for new systems (not in this list), they remove
code under no cicrcumstances, and they document which system was using
the code they add.
So in the FreeBSD case, one could attempt to add support for 44BSD ufs
in little-endian mode. This code should try to clearly detect the
presence of this specific file system, or ask the user to specify
FreeBSD in a mount option. If there is more than one version of 44BSD
ufs in little endian mode out there, we might need to make further splits.

For reference, I attach a very outdated patch of mine attempting to follow
that approach for FreeBSD. It used to work for me, YMMV.
