I just want to mention that there is work going on
in this area. Doug Ledford has some patches available
(for at least 2.0.x) to support the newer chipsets (the
7895). You can get the patches at ftp.dialnet.net.

I'm working on making a FreeBSD compatible SCSI layer
so we can import the FreeBSD driver with very few changes.
Other BSD-derived drivers may be able to take advantage
of this also. I haven't been actively maintaining the
current aic7xxx driver so I can devote my limited
spare time to this effort. (Note, that this new layer
doesn't replace the Linux SCSI layer, but merely knows
how to interface with it).
