gcc-2.8.0

Hello, just a status report on my attempt to use Linux with gcc-2.8.0.

Installed gcc-2.8.0 and libg++-2.8.0, and recompiled the kernel.
There were a multitude of warnings during compilation, but this was
expected as gcc-2.8.0's -Wall now reports many more "questionable" code
fragments (it is now much more like -pedantic I suppose). The kernel
seemed to compile fine and when I rebooted it started okay.

Did not notice any trouble until I tried using svgalib applications.
squake, qwcl, zgv, etc. all screwed up the console in the same way
(random lines etc all over the screen, nothing coherent at all).
The console still responded to keyboard input but I couldn't figure out
how to restore the console so I would reboot.

When I rebooted with an old kernel compiled with 2.7.2.3, things worked
fine again, and when I reinstalled 2.7.2.3 and recompiled things again
were fine. So I'm pretty sure that this is a problem with the kernel
being compiled with 2.8.0.

Excerpt from /proc/pci (while on a 2.7.2.3-compiled kernel):

Bus 0, device 10, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. Trio32/Trio64 (rev 68).
Medium devsel. IRQ 255.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe0000000.

Anyways, just thought my input might be useful. I know it's been said
that you aren't supporting Linux under 2.8.0, but I didn't hear about that
until I did all of this work so I figured I'd pass the info on anyways :)

Whoops, almost forgot, this was 2.0.33, on a Cyrix PR200+MX system w/ a VIA
mb/chipset. If anyone wants more information about my system, let me know
(I still have a 2.8.0-compiled kernel, so I can boot into it if needed).
Mike
