IP subsystem lockup in 2.1.85 *after* LARGE file FTP

I just installed a new 2.1.85 kernel on an Intel 430HX motherboard PC
with a 3Com 3c59x ethernet card. (Driver version 3c59x.c:v0.47H
12/4/97). I have no NFS mounted file systems and I am not using X.

After booting, I can use the network if I use it lightly. Pings and
FTP's of 10 to 40K files are OK. But, if I FTP PUT a 10Meg file, I loose
the network. Local processes are OK but I can't ping, telnet, or FTP.

Here is a 'ps' showing the FTP process is blocked on 'unix_gc':

For starters, what is 'unix_gc'? Second, is there anything obvious I
need to reconfigure to make it work? I'm enclosing my .config for

Any help would be appreciated. I'm going to try the same .config with
2.1.84 to see what it does. And, BTW, this system has been running
2.1.57 will almost no problems for a couple of months...
