I had a lot of problems at getting 2.1.92 to boot, and run
at my Alpha machine.
In the end it turns out, doing "make menuconfig" was the
main source of problems.
Using "make config" or "make xconfig" will produce correct
results, including even support for generic PCI-IDE-DMA.
I am inclined to say that "make menuconfig" should be wrapped
with a BIG warning that it is unsafe with certain input scripts.
An example of such input is: drivers/block/Config.in
