however, deprecated is common usage. Not that the opinion of some dictionary would matter, but Webster says dep.re.cate 1) vt, to express disapproval of 2) vt, DEPRECIATE syn. see disapprove

de.pre.ci.ate 1) vt, to lower the price or estimated value of 2) vt, to represent as of little value: DISPARAGE syn. see decry

Concerning the etymology, `deprecate' may be interpreted as meaning: `I pray thee, do not use this', while `depreciate' might be: `This is worthless junk'. (I mean to say that the Latin roots are different.)
