The mouseconfig program with RH 5.0 does PnP probing for serial mice,
as well as a few other tricks I picked up to detect the presence of a
mouse. Twiddling the modem control lines is part of the PnP spec. I
was afraid of the affect on UPS's but we haven't received any complaints
as far as I know about this side-effect.

I think it would only be a problem if the system was on standby power and
you twiddled the line. This could be a problem is a system rebooted and
serial PnP probing from the kernel shut the machine off. I know the APC
UPS's I've used WILL NOT turn off the power if the UPS is running off AC.

If this is wrong I'd like to know so I could fix the mouseconfig tool
to ask the user before banging on the serial port.
