swap/mem question

Just out of curiousity, what's the defined behaviour for a situation where
a process(es) attempt to use more memory than is available (real +
virtual). For example, I have 48Mb real + 48Mb swap, and suppose I have
30Mb swap in use, along with some cached memory, and I attempt to run
xanim on a 50Mb avi file? What should the system behave like? thrash like
mad? die?

The exact situation occured yesterday, I did what I described, and the
system went (hard drive sounds) thrash thrash ..... thrash,
thrash ..... thrash................. trash........................... (no
more hard drive activity)

The system stopped dead.
