GIF is not that important. There are dozens of alternatives. RSA is a
better example, but it took incredible effort to develop it and the
developers should be rewarded, unfortunately, that's not the way RSA is
turning out, but that has more to do with the government breaking its own
patent licensing rules than with any defect in the patent process itself.
