2.1.95: swapping frenzy..

Hi,

While running 2.1.95 and some fairly large apps. (gimp, netscape & emacs)
the kernel started swapping like mad, slowing down gradually but not
really recovering (ping still works, telnet doesn't). After waiting
10 minutes or so, the machine still swapped, although there were pauses
in between (but still no remote access though).
After killing (magic-sysreq way) X, the machine comes back to live...

Is this the same behaviour as the 2.1.90-2.1.93 kernels had (i jumped
from 2.1.88 to 2.1.95 so i cannot tell if this is so). And what can be
done about it ?

btw. the machine has 64Mb of memory and 100Mb swap.

ps. looking though the logs i see that the telnet attempts are there,
next time i'll just wait a little longer to see what happens...
