I've had problems with IDE on my GA-586DX mobo (twin P166MMX) since
2.1.85, and have reports from 2 other people of similar failures on
that board. I've sent a few e-mails to Gigabyte's tech support people
about it, but have gotten no responses. The consensus on the list
seems to be that the new IO-APIC code is out-running the motherboard,
or at least going fast enough to tickle some sort of laziness in the
motherboard's IDE controller/BIOS/etc.

I've pretty much abandoned IDE for the time being.

Please e-mail Gigabyte's support people and ask them if they've found
out anything about this. If I'm the only one who's complained to them
directly, I doubt they've put any manpower into tracking the problem
down.
