I'm having trouble with a 2.1.96 kernel freezing one of my machines.
Hardware is a (uniprocessor) P200 MMX with 64Mb memory, two NCR SCSI
cards, S3 Virge. For the kernel build I commented out the SMP statement in
the Makefile and didn't compile in kmod. A fuller listing of my (PCI)
hardware is below.
The kernel starts up fine with X/xdm but the first time I logout from an X
session, when it normally would reset the video card and bring up another
xdm login window, the machine just freezes - no num lock or caps lock
toggling, no ping answers, screen black. No problems doing logouts on a
console window.
Hardware was working fine for more than a year (most recently under
2.0.32). I swapped the 2.0.32 kernel out this morning for the 2.1.96 (I
was having memory leak problems with the 2.0.32 doing lots of recursive
diffs for verifying home-pressed CD-ROMS). With the 2.1.96 kernel running
there were no problems recompiling itself a few times and writing CD-ROMS.
Everything is a standard (updated) Redhat-5.0 except modified boot
sequence (for some reason the nfs mounting had to happen after the
portmapper started or else the machine went banannas a wee bit?!?) and
updates to utilities listed in Documentation/Changes taken from redhat
crontib. I built the kernel with gcc-2.8.1.
