ugh. Fixed. Thanks. I can't believe I went through all that trouble
only to have it turn out to be a wrong minor number. Apparently back when
I installed slackware96 it had it set up wrong.. I had even done a MAKEDEV
again just to be sure, but never bothered to check the minor.
