Wrong. The partition types are used by partitioning programs only, and by some
installers (e.g. Debian).
As stated above (isn't that Andries?): NOTHING in the kernel should depend on a
partition type.
Besides, you can have support for different partitioning schemes
(msdos/rdb/bsd/...), which use different conventions for partition types.
