The rm command from debugfs seems to have done the job [fingers
crossed].
For those interested in the gory details I used the -f switch with all
the commands stored in a file to save time ie.
debugfs -w -f commandfile /dev/hda2
Where commandfile contained
cd /lost+found
rm filename
...
close
quit
