Anyone having problems with PPP in recent 2.1.1xx's should try
compiling it in instead.
When I had it as a module, I was unable to get connected. The attempt
went something like:
pppd[588]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
pppd[588]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic 0xffff95f5> <pcomp> <accomp>]
pppd[588]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x2f <asyncmap 0xa0000> <auth pap> <magic 0x6a890ba6> <pcomp> <accomp>]
pppd[588]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x2f <asyncmap 0xa0000> <auth pap> <magic 0x6a890ba6> <pcomp> <accomp>]

pppd[588]: sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x8 user="USER" password="PASSWD"]
pppd[588]: sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x9 user="USER" password="PASSWD"]
pppd[588]: sent [PAP AuthReq id=0xa user="USER" password="PASSWD"]
pppd[588]: No response to PAP authenticate-requests
at which point it would just hang. To hangup and try again I had to
manually break the connection or kill pppd.
Recompiling with CONFIG_PPP=y (as I usually do) solved the problem.
Now it is back to normal:
pppd[563]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
pppd[563]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic 0xfab7> <pcomp> <accomp>]
pppd[563]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xcd <asyncmap 0xa0000> <auth pap> <magic 0x6ab6e458> <pcomp> <accomp>]
pppd[563]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0xcd <asyncmap 0xa0000> <auth pap> <magic 0x6ab6e458> <pcomp> <accomp>]
pppd[563]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic 0xfab7> <pcomp> <accomp>]

pppd[563]: sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x1 user="USER" password="PASSWD"]
pppd[563]: rcvd [PAP AuthAck id=0x1 ""]
pppd[563]: Remote message:
[etc]
(Perhaps this was already noted, but just in case....)
