That's what autofs is for :-) It mounts the server only while you
are actually doing operations, like your nightly ls.

In fact the default Red Hat autofs configuration has /fs/kernel pointing
to ftp.kernel.org:/pub/linux already. Perhaps this is a reason for the
endless list of mounts?
