SMP = dropped packets?

I'm running 2.1.111 on a dual PII-266 with a Tyan motherboard, a SMC 9334BDT
dual Tulip (Don Becker's driver), a DPT PM2144UW (Dario Ballabio's driver), and
other hardware that I don't *think* has any influence. I'm noticing that
kernels that have SMP enabled drop network packets like mad when there's any
significant CPU load; with a "make -j2" kernel compile, the system drops over
80% of received packets. With SMP disabled, a kernel compile results in 0%
packet loss.

Has anyone else experienced similar behavior?
