But this way you get at least a chance to get the machine up and
running again, perhaps to launch further diagnostic/etc.
I have an example for this. One of my boxes has an unreliable memory
configuration that works only if I set certain bits in the CMOS config
registers, but the BIOS is braindead and won't let me set them. Now
the battery has become flaky. I'd like an emergency boot with just a
CMOS setup program to correct memory settings. Not under DOS because
the thing hangs on a serial console.
Is there an AMI BIOS configuration tool which runs under Linux? :-)
Okay, that's broken hardware all over the place, and the mobo will
probably be replaced at some future time, but if it helps me to keep
it running now...
