For that matter, adopting a structured file format (or set of such file
formats: say elf, "ar", xml, and maybe something derived from Amiga's iff)
gives you a simple mechanism for including metadata, without restricting
you to enhanced file systems.
And of course all programs can deal with these formats as well as ever.
