IIRC, IRIX uses a pipe similar to what hpa suggested. _However_, the
documentation spells out clearly that the interface is not to be
trusted and that they reserve the right to change to a better
interface in the future. (Seems like they know that their current
scheme was a fast solution to get their desktop up and running).
Actually, if you want to have notification of a state-change of a file
under IRIX you don't use the kernel, but the fam(?) daemon which
encapsulates the kernel interface.
So I don't think compatibility with IRIX is very important in this case.
