That's what we begin to suspect as well...

I disabled the L2 cache to see if that would make any differences: the
system is slower and there is still a performance loss. So it does not
seem linked with L2 cache either.

With kernels 2.1.x SMP on PPro and PII, when the system is altered
(after an heavy load on the system), everything slows down.

Did you try Solaris 2.6 on your K6 system ?
Does Sun offers trials version of Solaris for Intel CPU ?
