I'd like to take this brief opportunity to introduce myself and set
the stage for ongoing communications.
As many of you are probably already aware, I am Kevin Quick and am
currently chairing the Project UDI specifications effort. Last week
at the IDF, Intel announced that they have joined Project UDI and that
they will be developing a freeware Linux implementation of UDI as part
of their contribution.
This has translated into a fair amount of press and also a
considerable amount of discussion on this newsgroup. David Hollister
has forwarded me a number of messages from this group which I will
try to respond to (perhaps in summary) shortly, and I have now
subscribed to this list to get this information directly.
I will try to explain what Project UDI is about and how that may
relate to the Linux community and will be glad to answer your
questions within the limits of my available bandwidth. I'd ask you to
please include "UDI" in your subject lines and/or direct your email to
me personally as well as to the list; I'll probably be filtering out
most of the non-UDI related mail for the time being.
I'm anticipating a flood of messages as a result of this introduction
so I'd actually request that most of you try to hold off for a day or
so to give me a chance to post responses to the current messages and
provide another couple of informational emails. Once I've established
this background an ongoing discussion is welcomed, but I did want to
let you know that we at Project UDI are aware of the concerns of the
Linux community and that we would like to open a dialog with you folks
rather than ignoring your input.
As my final disclaimer, please understand that I speak on behalf of
Project UDI, my company, and the intentions of the other Project UDI
companies as presented within Project UDI. I cannot speak directly
for those companies (for obvious legal reasons) so any attributions or
statements I make that you wish to have verified must be done by those
companies. There's also been some concern within the Linux community
of malignent or saboteur intentions; again I can only speak to the
declared intentions of the companies within the Project UDI meetings
but I'd like to personally assure this community that Project UDI is
intending to do positive things to enable future development rather
than take control or capabilities away from software and hardware
developers.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to working with you folks.
Regards,
Kevin
