Using 255, the "Phantom space", instead of 32 - the normal space - was a
common trick during the height of the DOS times. Everybody was doing it
for reason or another, from copy-protection to hidden passwords. However,
while all this is interesting, might I again point out that the patches
posted do not rely on the filenames being continuous, because at least
Linux allows you to happily create files with real spaces in them on FAT
filesystems. I haven't had time to check if NT and OS/2 deal with them,
though.
