This is correct. And in fact, you _can_ get command.com to create files
with spaces in them! Anybody who has been rescued from the MS-DOS world
would probably know the oldest file-hiding trick in the book - using the
alt+numpad keys to type in the ASCII code of one of the 3-4 "space"
characters into the directory name, then attribing the directory hidden.
No need to pull out Norton Disk Doctor ;)
GUI file managers spoiled the fun though.
