ZIP disks and 3com 509

Hi folks,
Yesterday somone removed the ZIP disk we've been using for backups and
didn't replace it before our nightly backup ran. From cron we have:

tar -cf /home /dev/hdd

where hdd is the ZIP drive. Since there was no disk in the drive, the
system hung - no telnet, no ping, no response of any kind. If we use a
tape drive and there is no tape in the drive it just says:

/dev/st0: no such device

I think there ought to be a similiar message appear in this case,
instead of a hard lock-up. This is with 2.1.108, so I tried upgrading
to 2.1.122. But now on boot i get this message:

eth1: Infinite loop in interrupt, status 2011

eth1 is a 3com 3c509. This is repeated about 20 times or so and then it
hangs. I have another machine at home with another 3c509 in it that I
can use for testing if more information is needed.
