I hate to reply to myself, but the problem turned out that my PnP BIOS
(influenced by the moon phase) silently changed the printer IRQ to that of
the SB card, and that this interrupt conflict caused the problems. There
is no problem in Linux itself (except that I don't know how a deactivated
printer can raise IRQs).
