Q1: Hitachi's Web site(s) claim that Linux has been ported to the SH-3. Is
this true ?
A1: Apparently not. Although I didn't get any response from Hitachi, several
people have indicated that their own research (even within Hitachi) in
this direction didn't yield any evidence that such a port exists.
Q2: Are gcc and friends okay on the SH-3 ?
A2: Yes.
Q3: Is there an easy means to enter privileged mode from Windows CE (for
booting) ?
A3: Didn't get any clear replies, only some indications that this may be
non-trivial.
Unfortunately, I also found some quite discouraging information:
- the HP360LX may contain some proprietary components for which
programming information may be difficult or impossible to obtain
- the Windows CE industry seems to be about to abandon the whole SH-3
line: new machines are either designed for ARM or MIPS, and
SH-3-based products (such as the HP360LX) are rumored to be phased
out.
Some people have suggested that I should consider joining the linux-7110
project (http://www.redhat.com/~ed/, Linux for the Psion S5 and the
Geofox, both are ARM7100-based) instead of trying to port Linux to the
SH-3, and that's what I eventually decided to do.
Thanks to everybody who has replied, in particular to Alan Cox, Toshi
Morita, NIIBE Yutaka, and Thomas Sailer.
