Of course this assumes that all the information needed by the new
kernel is actually available in the old one. This is not generally
true. I very much doubt one could replace a non-dircache kernel with
a current dircache one.
And even if all the information were available one had to identify
all the meaningful state inside the kernel and translate it to the
equivalent state of the new one. With million lines of code and an
unknown number of state bearing variables this is next to impossible.
