I wrote a trivial RO block device called ROMdisk about 8 months ago.
Together with ROMFS, it lets you do things like build a filesystem image
directly into the compressed kernel or treat a block of physical memory as
a block device.

But the message I sent to HPA requesting a device number didn't go
anywhere.
