And to add another report of the same hanging symptoms in the new 5.1.x
driver shipping with 2.1.21[56]

I was fine with 5.0.19 and 5.0.20 drivers, but was broken prior to that.

Bus 0, device 14, function 1:
SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7895U (rev 4).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ a. Master
Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=8.Max Lat=8.
I/O at 0xe800 [0xe801].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xfebff000 [0xfebff000].
