Gtk DOES have to sit on X11 till recompilation. May be it's possible to use
even GNOME for i386-based embedded system or some other components from standard
distrubition but use basic systems from standard distribution like kernel ???
Why you'll need modular sound for embedded system without soundcard ? Or PCMCIA
support ? You'll need custom-build kernel in any case.
