I have the exact same problem here. I'm running 2.1.129-ac1 with knfs1113 &
pppd v2.3.5

I'm using a usr33.6, it works fine on a p120 with 48mb ram; however when i
put it on my 486 workstation with 8megs i start seeing the errors. The
installations are virtually the same; with a few kernel compile differences.
I have however tried using the same kernel with no difference.

I've been doing some tests recently with changing the niceness of the pppd
task. It does seem to make a difference, however only in the time to
recover from a stall, not the consistency of them..
