MM experience with 2.1.130-3: swapping versus uncaching?

2.1.130-3 seems to be the best performance kernel I've ever used (at
least, in memory-management) but does REALLY seem to protect its page
cache! I have a 64Mb system, currently with pagecache min=5% and
buffermem min=5%.
The other day, I ran xquake with some other programs running, and linux
proceeding to dump 21Mb to the swap, even though there was about 30 Mb
of page cache. When it was done, there was about 14Mb used+shar, 40 Mb
page cache, and 14Mb swap.
This turned out to have been a good idea...none of the swapped stuff
was being used much because there was little paging going on. But it
seems that this sudden dumping to swap is trigger by lack of unused
pages, all at once... is that such a good idea?
However, overall this swapping DOES seem to improve performance, even
though its sometimes a bit sudden.
