in dos you have to start an "sb16-emulator"...
a kind of pnp-manager like ctcm in awe64's?
and in win9x there is a sb16emulation-driver to...
ist the CTSYN.VXD and uses typically resources (3e/a, 1irq, 2dma) for
dos-based sound... and it worx
