System time during Serial/Parallel Port usage

is the following the expected behaviour?

If I transmit data to the printer (parallel port) or to or from the modem
(serial port), xosview shows 100% system load on one of my CPUs instead of
100% nice (rc5des).

Is this a known problem?

Linux 2.1.129ac3 SMP.
