SB sound FUBAR in Quake2

I have a Sound Blaster AWE32 PnP in a PPro 180Mhz system. In all kernels since
at least 2.1.128, maybe 2.1.127 (not sure) Quake 2 sounds more like the latest
Merzbow composition (random noise) than an interplanetary war. I compile the
driver directly into the kernel because I'm too lazy to put the info into my
conf.modules... Might that make a difference?

I left the list a while ago due to the spam (Guns! GPL!), but I may return
judging from the latest archive... Mail me anyway, if you have an answer or if
you need more system info... though I'm not sure what else would be relevant.
The SB has its own IRQ and DMA, so that's not it.
