upgrading when 2.3.x arives

I am wondering that when the 2.2.x series of kernels arives and work begins on 2.3.x will it be possible to upgrade from the 2.1.x series source tree to the 2.3.x with a simple patch or will it be necessary to download the entire package. If that is the case I fear that I may not be able to have a nice new kernel.
