Im not aware of any legal reasons. But I know some authors who do rather
like their copyright banner to scroll past.

Caldera had a default boot that was quiet (and you boot with verbose as
an option for a long time), Solaris nowdays has a very quiet boot by
default. The latest netwinders do also.
