I had this problem, fixed it by tweaking a setting in svgalib... Don't
know what you're running, but I've got a Riva 128 card (Canopus Total3d
128V) and am using the Vesa driver for svgalib as well (for whatever
reason the NV3 driver segfaults for me). I believe the setting in question
was "VesaText"... check the documentation in a current svgalib 1.3.1
snapshot for details on what it's supposed to do.
