Slowness of 2.1.131

I hate to say this, because with just one or two "foreground apps"
running, 2.1.131 seemed very much faster than all 2.1.x (since about
2.1.84 which is where I started using devel kernels).

Unfortunately today, I am trying to compile the latest gimp development
and mozilla development. It seems markedly and noticeably slower than
before when I have two simultaneous compiles going. I have no hard
benchmark, but I am sure it is slower. I am not sure when it would have
started. I have 128 meg of memory so I am not sure it is the now
infamous rusting. I am open for suggestions and ideas. I prefer to not
run prepatch devel kernels. I have some inkling about ac kernels only
because of a horror story from the past (hey, I know that is what devel
kernels are all about, besides I still wonder if that story were true),
but I am willing to give them a shot. I probably won't be willing to
try just any patch though.
