eth0: Emergency stop, looping startup interrupt. in 2.1.131-ac5

Have an odd occurance. Running my Tyan Tomcat IV motherboard with 2x
Pentium 233MMX I have an SMP 2.1.131-ac5 kernel (though it has done it once
previously.) When I ran PPP (as a module) after my computer had been idle
for hours previously, I received:

Dec 15 00:31:23 moving kernel: Swansea University Computer Society IPX 0.38 for NET3.037
Dec 15 00:31:23 moving kernel: IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Dec 15 00:31:23 moving kernel: eth0: Emergency stop, looping startup interrupt.
Dec 15 00:31:23 moving kernel: eth0: Disabling interrupt handler 16 to avoid locking up the machine.
Dec 15 00:31:23 moving kernel: Trying to free free IRQ16

Dec 15 00:31:24 moving kernel: CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regents of the University of California
Dec 15 00:31:24 moving kernel: PPP: version 2.3.3 (demand dialling)
Dec 15 00:31:24 moving kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
Dec 15 00:31:24 moving kernel: registered device ppp0
Dec 15 00:31:24 moving pppd[24845]: pppd 2.3.3 started by r, uid 0
Dec 15 00:31:26 moving kernel: eth0: MII monitoring tick: CSR12 ffffff80, MII status 7809, Link partner report 0000.
Dec 15 00:31:26 moving kernel: eth0: No link beat on the MII interface, status then 7809 now 7809.
Dec 15 00:32:00 moving pppd[24845]: Serial connection established.

eth0 is a Netgear FA-310TX of the true DEC chip persuasion:

tulip.c:v0.83 10/19/97 becker@cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov
eth0: Digital DS21140 Tulip at 0x6100, 00 40 05 41 96 fa, IRQ 16.
eth0: EEPROM default media type Autosense.
eth0: Index #0 - Media MII (#11) described by a 21140 MII PHY (1) block.
eth0: MII transceiver found at MDIO address 0.
eth0: MII monitoring tick: CSR12 ffffff80, MII status 7809, Link partner report 0000.
eth0: No link beat on the MII interface, status then 7809 now 7809.

The cable is a crossover cable to my laptop, which is off.

Question is, why does PPP tickle the Ethernet card and any ideas on this
IRQ problem?
