kernel: Unable to load interpreter

I've seen this error message before but can't remember the cause or solution
(short of hitting the red button):

kernel: Unable to load interpreter

This is on the 2.0.33 kernel.

Trying to do simple things like 'ls' results in seg faults and subsequent core
dumps.

Can anyone refresh my memory?

Thanks,
Dan
