Let me throw in a comment. How about, in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, after
the root file-system is mounted, just add `>/etc/boot.id`.

This will create a 0 length file with a time/date stamp that should
be fairly unique. If you don't want to stat the file, just do
`date >/etc/boot.id` instead.
