Er.. there seems to be more than one issue.

There's something to be said for simplicity. Installation happens rarely
for many people (and so should be optimized for simplicity). And, not
all people install Linux as provided by some multi-million dollar company.
And you're ignoring the other issues Linus was talking about [for example,
kernel support for removable peripherals].
