The telephone system uses one pair of wires for both directions
of traffic.

Well. I guess that still doesn't explain how to fix the
problem I and a lot of other people are seeing. Since we
have workarounds for just about every other hardware
problem, I guess we will want to do something to have
at least decent worst-case performance on slightly flakey
networks...
